A delightful perk of waking up in the Davis Mountains is wondering what wildlife neighbors I'll encounter over a morning hike or stroll with a cup of coffee. Javelina are often mistaken for wild hogs, but these collared peccaries aren't pigs at all. Almost blind, their survival depends on hearing and smell. They do have sharp tusks, and can be fierce when threatened, but it's impossible not to smile at these grumpy, comical critters when they bristle up to twice their normal size. Part of my series of neighborhood critters, "the hood".
This 8" x 10" painting is matted in acid-free ivory to fit a readymade 11" x 14" frame.
