This pass in the mountains between Alpine and Fort Davis weaves through land still wildly rugged, and the West Texas sky is even wilder. I chose to paint this familiar route of ours -- one known to locals simply as "the canyon" -- as it was a hundred years ago, unpaved and uncomplicated by fences.
