Far West Texas enjoys the most amazingly colorful sunrises. This is the view one dawn as we hiked the mountain we call "home". From this rocky outcropping, you can see sixty miles or more in every direction, and I always feel like I'm right on top of Texas.
I created this vivid pastel painting in my studio. Several photo references helped me replicate the colors of that morning hike. I'm not sure I would've been bold enough a painter to make them up!
The Davis Mountains, the vantage point in this painting, are volcanic in origin, so I like to paint an inner glow into the rocks. The sky gave me all the other colors I needed.
