Autumn color in the high desert of West Texas is always a treat, especially when these old cottonwoods on the grounds of historic Fort Davis at the base of Sleeping Lion Mountain start turning golden. We picnicked under these trees when I was a girl; now, as they break and fall, new saplings replace them. It's the old fellows that hold our hearts, though, so those are the trees I paint.
