We love to explore the canyonlands of Texas, but summer heat can curtail hiking much during midday. So on this August day, we got an early start and enjoyed the colorful shadows on the land. Clouds floated across the sky just enough to keep it cool enough to wander the riverbed, where prickly pear tunas glowed with the same rich reds as the cliffs. When I began painting, it was the heat-baked color that I most wanted to share.
