Summer in Far West Texas is short and usually, wet. (Gotta love it.) As we drove to town for our mail, a white horse waded in such brilliantly colored water in this small tank on a Davis Mountain ranch, I had to paint him. "A Long, Cool Drink", my original pastel landscape painting, depicts that hot summer day during our monsoon season. This landscape is near Point of Rocks on the Davis Mountain Scenic Loop. A bit of history: Point of Rocks was a rest stop on the old Overland Butterfield Trail route between San Antonio and El Paso. Today, working ranches still cover most of the thinly populated high desert country of Jeff Davis County in Far West Texas.
