The Journey of Light by Lindsey Veil Image: Left panel of The Journey of Light triptych. 30” x 45” I did not prime the wood first, but I stained it to be the sky. Then I painted the darkest values in first, and used the wet-on-wet technique for the fog and gradient in the background mountains. I had to let each layer of mountains dry before I could paint the next layer in.

Painting will remain on the heart failure unit on the 5th floor. The client commissioned the painting with the goal to help patients heal faster during their stay at the hospital.
The Journey of Light by Lindsey Veil Image: Work in Progress in Lindsey Veil’s studio. After staining the sky, I had to cover it up with plastic. If paint gets on the sky, then I have to redo the entire thing because it can’t be fixed.
The Journey of Light by Lindsey Veil Image: Framing was designed and completed by the artist. A satin UV varnish was applied at the end of the painting to provide depth to the colors, and to bring all the finishes of the painting to the same level.

The painting was accomplished using the grid method. The unprimed wood is stained, then painted background to foreground using wet-on-wet methods and painting darkest values to lightest values. It is finished with a satin UV protective varnish to give an even finish and deeper dimension to the colors.
Art is powerful! The goal of the client was for this commission to encourage hospital patients located on the heart failure floor to heal. The hospital wanted art that would fit the aesthetic, colors and style of the brand new, award-winning patient tower, as well as relate to the local North Georgia scenery there. I made the trek to the top of Brasstown Bald for reference photos to paint from. I brought my photos home and pieced them together to create this panorama painting. This special place is the highest elevation point in Georgia, and when someone is waiting for news about a loved one, they want to feel at peace. This painting is filled with hope and light and speaks to reflecting on the journey of life.
