Linda Slattery Sherman
Montgomery Village, MD
Painter, printer and multimedia artist based in Montgomery Village, MD
MessageI attended college at Carnegie Mellon University where I earned a BFA in graphic design. After working in advertising, book design, illustration and publication design, I opened my own design firm, Linda S. Sherman Design, Inc. Our clients included PBS, the Kennedy Center, shopping malls, many labor unions, associations and the U.S. government.
After selling my business I began again to follow my interest in painting. In addition to the training in fine arts and design at Carnegie Mellon, I continue to take painting classes at local colleges and with private instructors. My study currently centers around the Delaplaine in Frederick with Calvin Edward Ramsburg. I was an active member of TAG/The Artists Gallery for many years.
Statement
In general, I am an abstract painter. My paintings are all about the process of discovery, letting the painting tell me where to go. Sometimes it's about the motion of making marks that result from large gestures. Other times it's about the surface of the canvas. I scrape, squirt and rub until I get what I want, reacting to each mark That I make, often winding up in a very different place from where I started. Having been a graphic designer for many years, composition and structure are very important to me as well as surface texture and color. Sometimes subject matter emerges, and I go with that if it interests me. Sometimes the marks, color and form are their own subject matter.
