LINDA PACKARD
STATEMENT
“Direct observation en plein air is how I most like to work. I am drawn to the small,
ordinary elements and compositions in a landscape often overlooked in pursuit of
the sweeping vista. Direct observation gives me the basic composition, colors, and
atmosphere, but through the process of painting I make the landscape my own. My
work is expressive, responding to the experience of being in that place, at that spot.
In translating that energy, I like to dance along the edge of abstraction. The physicality
of my paint and the way I use it in making marks is critical to the expression.
Building up, rubbing out, scraping, mixing wet into wet, and thick broad sweeps of
juicy color are key elements in my work.”
