These decks were inspired by my painting of The Suicide King (of Hearts) and research into the origins of playing cards. China had cards as far back as the 10th Century, Europe mainly Germany and France from 14th century.  Two hundred years later cards were standardised where the Court Cards represented great historical leaders, emperors and biblical heroes. Times changed however and by the 1815 they became what they are today, royals dressed in Renaissance attire with no recognition just like pieces of the chessboard.
Originally I started painting the entire deck created in my favourite style of Geometric Abstract, wanting to make it historical but more culturally diverse and nod to the cards Oriental/European beginnings. With Uni commitments and other projects I decided to utilise new technology (Openart, Photoshop, Canva) to truly bring them into the modern era by feeding it my ideas, characters, photo references and style to generate images that I hope you find as joyful as I do.
Version 1 of Cultural Fusion Poker Cards was created, and now I have completed Animal Kingdom Poker Deck for kids and adults alike. In this deck I have created hybrid human/animal figures depicting the court cards. Most of these magnificent animals are endangered and I hope it marks as a reminder of what could be lost to us, especially in these uneasy times. Both decks will soon be available for purchase.
