Statement
I am a lifelong multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Madison, WI. I like to draw, paint, collage, take pictures, spin, knit, and weave.
For the past few years, I have been thinking about how to combine images so as to have one picture composed of multiple images. They can show changes in time, the relationships between people and places, and the relationship between inner and outer life, or simply a deeper look at a moment. Weaving images, for me, is a satisfying way to explore those themes.
I use old family photos and documents, pictures I have taken myself, and found images, along with watercolor, ink and pencil to make these works. After printing, drawing, or painting the images, I cut each sheet into strips by hand, then manually weave the two sheets of paper together, strip by strip. When I am satisfied, the edges are secured and the images cropped to their final dimensions.
Although I choose images carefully to show the idea I have in mind, I am always surprised by the results. Even if I use two copies of the same picture, the weaving process changes the way the images line up with each other because the paper has a thickness that skews the picture. It is a delight to see what comes through in each woven collage, both expected and unexpected.
