I painted this as one of my entries for the upcoming American Academy of Equine Art Limited Palette show. For this show we are challenged to paint with no more than three colors plus white. But, since I often paint with a limited palette anyway, I decided to attempt this one with two colors plus white. My colors were Transparent Red Oxide and Veridian Green. These are complimentary colors, but ones I very rarely use. I wanted to try something completely new with this one. I started with the red oxide ground, which I truly like showing through. I found that I really like the harmony of these two colors together. I was very tempted to add a yellow or a blue, but I resisted the temptation. I wanted to see it through. As a result, these are colors I will use more often. I found the red oxide works about as well as the quinachridone burnt orange I usually go to for chestnuts. This photo is one I took when I visited Aiken, SC. I can't wait to get back there. It's a wonderful little town and VERY horsey. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed painting it!
