On a cool, golden evening at Sombrero Ranch in Craig, Colorado, the cowboys drove the horses at a gallop through standing water. I was at a distance from the horses and they were moving fast, so I purposely limited the detail of the piece. But it was the light that evening had a quality I will never forget. I painted this piece for the American Academy of Equine Art Limited Palette show. My colors were Indian Yellow, Payne's Gray, and Madder Red. I chose these vibrant colors because I wanted to try to capture the warm light and how it played on the horses. I rarely use Payne's Gray, but loved the purples it created with the Madder Red, and the great contrast with the Indian Yellow. The Indian Yellow is one I use fairly often when trying to create a glowing light.
