Artist Statement
A blank surface. Loosely formed ideas. A finished work. The challenge. Sketches in a visual journal. Drawings and studies of color and composition. Medium and surface. Pushing and pulling. Emerging images. Pleasing to the eye. Speaking to the soul. The satisfaction of creating. Leigh as an artist.
Active experimentation with the elements and principles of art, as well as various tools and materials, brings me great joy and allows me to give expression to my personal aesthetics through my paintings. My current work utilizes the fluidity and vibrancy of alcohol ink on yupo paper and acrylics on canvas to achieve representational embodiment rather than strict subject interpretation. I am able to create dramatic effects in my paintings using various chemicals and tools other than brushes. This approach helps me to capture the look and feel of places and moods that inspire me.
I’ve been known to take my alcohol ink paintings several steps further by first digitizing them and then having them professionally infused into the surface of specially prepared aluminum through a dye sublimation process. This process allows me to increase the size of my paintings, while uniquely preserving the richness and luminosity of the alcohol inks in a more durable format.
