Statement
My recent work of nature inspired abstracts capture the color and feel of a place. Inspiration often comes from personal experience during walks along the lakeshore near my home or the serene beauty of land, trees and sky experienced during travel. I especially find wandering pavement cracks intriguing and often include them as linework in paintings.
I begin my painting process with a bright acrylic wash and gestural mark making using various dry media, ink, and fluid acrylic. The first layer of oil and cold wax medium applied is thick and textured, with subsequent layers alternating between opaque and transparent contrasting hues that develop the essence of the painting. Removal techniques are used to reveal previous layers and add textural elements. Expressive linework is scratched through the layers to reveal unexpected color or collage. The works are best viewed up close in person to appreciate the subtle nuances created during the multi-layered art process.
“My greatest purpose as an artist is to connect to others through my art in a way that brings joy to their life in a personal, enriching, and meaningful way.”
