Oils and Pastels
While soft pastels were Laura's first medium since her teen years, oil painting is her first love. Both media are worked by building layers, usually from dark to light, and the pure pigments are easy to blend. Only the binder is different, so it makes sense that if you like one you would like the other. Painting in oils is more complicated, however, and because of the drying time takes much longer to complete. Laura often spends a few months on one oil painting, and has a looser style with pastels.
Watercolors
Laura is self taught in the art of watercolor painting, and did not really begin developing her watercolor technique until the early 2010's. Her love of the medium coincides with her love of travel, as the supplies are easily portable, unlike oils. She continues to perfect her skills in this medium not only with practice, but by studying with professional watercolorists such as Randy Mayer. Laura's watercolor paintings are often painted Plein Air and the finer details finished in the studio. Her work has been shown with the NJ Watercolor Society, as well as several other art societies, and her paintings have received several awards.
