“This collection of work is about celebrating the landscape. A good day for me is one spent working on a pastel or oil painting trying to capture the time of day, the humidity in the air or the shadows on surfaces, before the sunlight changes. When I paint, I have a running dialog with myself about the work developing in front of me. The conversation is usually about art related or technical things to solve. It takes the form of a lot of questioning and standing back evaluating the scene before me. I want to show a real place and a real time, without it being too descriptive and yet not so underdeveloped as to appear vague. I want the viewer to feel invited to come into this place and explore again and again. If I say too much with a pastel stroke or brushstroke, the work becomes a problem solved and not the delight to the soul that brought me to it in the first place. I hope you enjoy these results as I continue on my long discovery of portraying the landscape and all its secrets.”
Art critic Brian Sherwin, Editor of The Art Edge, commented on Laura's pastel landscape paintings. Sherwin said, "Artist Laura Lengeling skillfully captures the essence of the rural Midwest landscape. Her impressive landscape paintings acknowledge the beauty that can be observed if we explore beyond the beaten path. Each painting is a study of space and color -- a moment caught in time for all to observe."
