About Laura Caliguiri

Statement

At the heart of my creative process is the act of layering acrylic paint on canvas, using both traditional brushes and unconventional mark-making tools. I work through cycles of construction and deconstruction, responding intuitively to each gesture as it reshapes the composition. Every action leaves a trace—an imprint that informs the next move.

I am energized by the tension between vibrant and muted colors, the interplay of varied shapes and marks, and the challenge of resolving visual dissonance. My work is non-objective and expressive, driven by a desire to transform discordant elements into a cohesive whole. As Odilon Redon once said, “I paint not the things I see but the feelings they evoke in me.” That sentiment deeply resonates with my approach.

Following a multi-decade career in Washington, DC, I transitioned into the world of visual art—a second chapter defined by exploration, intuition, and vibrant expression. My aesthetic is rooted in a deep appreciation for color, texture, and layered composition—elements I continue to refine with a discerning eye.

I studied under several master artists and immersed myself in coursework at institutions including the renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA, where my passion for painting first took shape. Today, I share that passion as an instructor at the Center for the Arts Bonita (CFAB) in Naples, FL, where I encourage students to embrace color, experimentation, and process-driven discovery.

My painting Good Vibrations earned second place in CFAB’s 2024 “Connections” exhibition—a reflection of my evolving voice and dynamic approach. With studios in both Old Town Alexandria, VA, and Naples, FL, I remain open to new materials, techniques, and ideas, guided by my belief in “patina over provenance”—a celebration of timeworn surfaces and the stories they hold.
