Larry Alexis | aka Junkart Dog
Larry Alexis is an unusual artist originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan currently residing in Goose Creek, South Carolina. He has not had any formal training but has developed a unique style from trial and error along with pure imagination. His works span a variety of subjects from nature to technology, to fantasy and life experiences and everything in between. The works have been described as whimsical and imaginative and sometimes even realistic and emotional as in the case of his award winning poetry.
He has not preferred media but does most of his creating in metal and found objects for 3d works with the only stipulation is the materials used must be at least 90% previously used or bought secondhand. Sometimes he will see a found object and know that it should be part of something bigger and starts a project that flows in a direction based on materials at hand and what the piece is saying to him. Other times he will challenge himself to do works in a more traditional manner, especially in 2d works where he likes to use a variety of media including, but not limited to, acrylics, watercolor, inks, color pencils and anything else to enhance a piece.
Larry’s works are in collections around the United States and have been exhibited in many galleries in the South Carolina lowcountry, including, but not limited to Art on the Square Gallery, Public Works Art Center, North Charleston Arts Fest, Hilton Head Art League Gallery and on permanent display at Goose Creek City Hall, Goose Creek Activity Center and numerous “geese” around the city of Goose Creek. He has been featured in the Summerville Journal and Charleston Style and Design magazine.
He has made it his mission in life to inspire other people to explore their creative side and put things where they belong. Nothing gives him more pleasure than watching a child or inspiring artist as their face lights up with imagination and creativity when they view his work. He has been known to give away or offer at a ridiculously low price, artwork when someone has an emotional attachment. He also volunteers to teach basic painting to senior citizens and both the Goose Creek Recreation Center and Hanahan Seniors Center.
His works can be found at Art on the Square Gallery, Summerville SC and online at Junkartdog.art. Follow him on Instagram and Facebook @larry.alexis.5. If you are ever in Goose Creek, South Carolina, stop by his house directly behind city hall and see some more amazing works.
