Encaustic wax is a mixture of beeswax and damar resin that was first used in 4th century B.C. Its chemical makeup allows the wax to harden firm and provides an incredibly durable surface that, in some cases, has survived for centuries. I stumbled upon this ancient medium online and once I started experimenting with it, I was hooked.
My artwork is created by torch fusing clear encaustic wax, encaustic wax paints, and by adding various oil-based paints and pigments. Each piece contains several layers of wax that have been heat fused with collage-based materials and/or my own photographic images. My encaustic paintings are applied to a cradled wood canvas board and the edges are then stained to create a finished piece, ready to display.
Statement
I find my creative inspiration in the challenge of taking something ordinary and making it abstract. By blending nature, texture, color and wax together, I can create something straight out of my imagination. Being an artist gives me permission to bend reality.
