The collection of stones in the Italian countryside looked at first like an ordinary pile of rocks tossed aside by a farmer clearing his field. On closer examination, I could see evidence of carving and shaping, and realized they were the remnants of an ancient construction of some sort. No longer useful as a wall, they nevertheless continued to provide protection and shelter for the new tree, struggling to put down roots. Both the stones and the tree have persevered.
