On a trip through northern Minnesota, I attended a rendezvous reenactment. The sincerity and enthusiasm of the young Native American girls were evident as they prepared for their part in the traditional dance performance. In my composition I emphasized the dancers' interaction and involvement with the older girl, who was mentoring the group. Modern accessories and fabrics indicate that for them, tradition is influenced by the contemporary world. I kept the background simple, suggestive of a forest, to keep the focus on the dancers.
