The late day sun pouring in the kitchen window created dramatic shadows on the unstaged still life of hats and other items hanging on the tarpaper wall of the desert homestead cabin. We would work outside in the morning heat, made bearable by the shade-creating hats. But the afternoon sun was too much for us; the hats remained on the wall while we rested until the sun went below the horizon and cool air drew us back outdoors. I wanted to capture the strong contrasts and amber tones created by the strong sunlight, and the peaceful quiet of the scene.
