All the Tree Portraits Series paintings start with individual trees or groups of trees and something that stands out about them. This painting is about the way the trees seem to bring colours along with the light they filter when in a dense grouping. It is on a very long narrow panel, making a photograph of it all difficult. It is covered with paper and developed with both painted inks and drawn oil crayons. The resulting layering of painting and drawing is related to earlier works, including full-sized wall murals in an old house in Amsterdam.
