Kim Chigi is a contemporary abstract painter born in New Jersey and currently living and working in Petaluma, CA. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University and continued her studies in painting at the Aegean Center for Fine Art in Greece and Italy.
Inspired by the uncertainty and fluidity of life, Kim prefers to work intuitively and let the brush, paint, and ever changing composition guide her. Always seeking that moment of repose or liminal space where she can pause contemplating her place in the work. Impermanence, openness, and indeterminacy provide her with periods of transition as she works during which normal limits of thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed, clearing a trajectory for something new.
Statement
My art is a reflection of my deep wanderlust and desire for unique experiences. I am inspired by the bold, expressive colors, sounds, textures and movements that I encounter during my travels, and I strive to capture these elements in my work. My work is created with a layered history of color and mark making inspired by nature and is greatly influenced by my experiences with travel and introspective writing.
The creative process is an intuitive one for me and it involves a great deal of experimentation and excavation of concepts and topics I explore in each piece. I work with a variety of mediums, including acrylic paint, charcoal, pencil, and collage to create works that are unique, expressive and capture moments of freedom. Adding, subtracting and curating as I develop each piece is the core of my work and helps nourish the curiosity and evolution of my process. Details and characteristics are extracted from my travels and writing in order to create a cohesive composition through intuitive layering, application and design.
