Wood engravings by Gillian Tyler, translated from Middle English by Thomas J. Elliott.
This first edition was designed and printed in Monotype Bulmer at the Press of David Godine. One thousand deluxe copies were printed on Monadnock wove paper. Copies numbered 1-900 were bound in cloth over boards and enclosed in a slipcase. Two thousand trade copies were printed on Mohawk Superfine paper. The illustrations were printed directly from the blocks engraved by Gillian Tyler.
Gillian Tyler, born in 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland, was a freelance wood engraver and painter. Tyler studied at Smith College in Massachusetts, later receiving the Max Beckmann Scholarship from the Brooklyn Museum School. She also studied at the Kunst Akademie in Hamburg, Germany, under a Fulbright Scholarship. Tyler operated a small letterpress shop and illustrated numerous books for various publishers. She studied painting under Donald Stone. Her work can be seen to capture the essence of her New England surroundings.
