Postures for the figures in a new painting. I’m in the middle of another painting of a group of figures. As I struggled with painting decisions I decided starting a second similar painting would be an effective way to work on conflicting ideas. I did this drawing to start exploring new figure relationships, adding washes to affect values while considering color relationships.

The first painting is roughly painted with gestural marks, edges that come and go. It’s at a point that I often stop at, being satisfied with the rough quality that I find so expressive. However, I want to push past this point with further color work and value development within the shapes and create more variety in the edge range from painterly to crisp. My goal is to find a more complex, painterly surface that enhances abstraction and refinement.
