A Question of Balance

Balance in Nature reflects on the tenuous balance of everyday living.

A Question of Balance

I began this painting in the Siskiyous Mountains, perched among the giant boulders on the back side of Mt. Ashland, the highest peak in the Siskiyous. I’m looking in the landscape for images that are suggestive of ideas beyond the impact of their physical characteristics. i try to layout and develop the image until I’m done or too tired too continue, then return to my studio to make adjustments and finish. I paint outdoors because it’s a way to be in that outside all day, I find spending extended periods outside surround by the natural world brings a sense of peace and perspective to living. Paint djustments in the studio are shifts in values, hue, and form that subtly alter the way the eye moves around and through the image. It’s like a puzzle, as complex or simple as I feel benefits the thoughts behind it.
