The imagery in this piece--the section of South Table Mountain including Castle Rock overlaid with a lace handkerchief--was printed onto a piece of damask tablecloth using a historic photographic process called cyanotype. It's basically a blueprint. The substrate (the tablecloth) is treated with a UV light-sensitive emulsion and then exposed to sunlight. On this piece I didn't cover the whole cloth with emulsion, which resulted in sections that stayed white, and reminded me of clouds. I used ink to introduce other colors into the background and to play with the patterns in the handkerchief.
