Statement
Artist statement
I describe myself as an observational and expressionist landscape painter.
The Northland landscape intrigues me with its constantly changing light and atmosphere affected by the sea, sun, wind and rain.
I attempt to capture something of the atmosphere in my work – its junction with the sea and its connection to the land through the seasons.
I like to paint in acrylics on paper, canvas and panel, and oils on canvas and panel. I am inspired by the experience of the human condition in relation to the landscape by New Zealand poets and writers Brasch, Tuwhare, Curnow, Frame, Baxter and Fairburn. Painters such as McCahon, Hotere, Hanly and Albrecht inspire me for their use of colour and passion for New Zealand’s unique landscapes.
