Ladders rise as symbols of passage and possibility, carrying the eye beyond the edges of the frame. After seeing Yayoi Kusama’s KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature exhibition at the New York Botanical Garden—on view from April 10 to October 31, 2021—I was inspired by her joyful use of polka dots to suggest endless expansion. Those dotted rhythms weave through this work as an echo of her vision, yet also as my own gesture. By painting over the frame, I invite the viewer to imagine movement past boundaries—toward the infinite.
