Light of the Earth
I learned about a discovery of petroglyphs and pictographs in the Chauvet Caves in France. They are dated to 32,000 BC, which makes them the world’s oldest artwork. This is astonishing to comprehend. In 1988 I produced 100 oil paintings of the petroglyphs in the American southwest. They appear in my work since that time.
So much was unknown to the ancient ancestors who pecked into rock. Their hand prints attest to the desire to make one’s presence known. Today when I peck into paper with scribing tools I also express what the unknown implies – how it allows messages to seep through the consciousness.
