THE SENTRY is painted on a reclaimed canvas found in an alley behind a Chicago theater. It needed repairs and had a large Z shape emblazoned on it that still faintly shows through. The storied history of the substrate echoes the battle worn character of the guard painted on its surface, and thus the materials become part of the artwork itself. -- This is part of my "Rooster" Series. Seeing the rooster in a dramatic context affords him a dignity and depth that might not occur to us otherwise. I love everything about painting roosters, especially layering their their fluffy, luminous feathers.
