Tucked away in a small alcove of trees on Sunny Creek Road I stumbled upon the perfect still life. After I finished the painting I learned a fantastic story of why the chairs were there. But leaving the story there is how I want to share this piece, letting the viewer create their own narrative. This painting dually serves as a historical document painted with a modern approach.
I stumbled upon the perfect still life tucked away in a small alcove of trees on Sunny Creek Road, an undeveloped area less than a quarter of a mile from a major north-south boulevard in Carlsbad. I was struck by the juxtaposition between the wildness of the landscape and the intrusion of the human-made objects. I wanted to render the improbable yet perhaps inevitable coupling of the two worlds, a kind of historical document but painted with a modern edge. I learned, after I finished the painting, the fantastic story of how the chairs came to be there, who sat in them, what they did while there, and for how long. But leaving the story there is how I want to share this piece, letting the viewer create their own narrative.
