“In Memory” is a painting of juxtapositions. The subject of horse and rider, once depicted in a celebratory or competitive state, is now shown as a snapshot of lifestyle, a rider in peaceful solitude. Traditionally muted tones are replaced with warmth, using neon yellow (and glitter), browns and blues in harmony. The rider is no longer the focal point but a figurative subject in a balanced composition as the bold lines are married to the environment. Most notable is the long shadows that question the time of day and, with the use of vivid color, create positive/negative imagery, twisting the seasons. As we look further, this contemporary landscape pays homage to Carlsbad’s past yet nods toward its future to preserve a memory before it is destroyed.
