Karla Cohen
Lincoln , MA
Karla is a mixed-media artist based outside of Boston. Inspired by other artists, film and music, she balances her full-time career with her creative practice.
MessageBorn in Atlanta, Karla’s artistic journey spans disciplines, geographies, and philosophies, blending intellectual rigor with intuitive expression. Mentored by Virginia Carnes at The Westminster Schools, she developed a fascination with color, composition, and the emotional power of art. Karla’s academic background in French, International Relations, and art history informs her work, which is shaped by her international experiences living in Singapore, France, the UK, and now just outside Boston.
Inspired by Fauvism and artists like Matisse, Klimt, and Picasso, Karla’s work is known for bold color, layered symbolism, and dynamic compositions. Recently, she has expanded into film and videography, merging movement, sound, and visual distortion to explore time and emotional depth. Since 2017, her practice has evolved into a means of translating life’s essential truths—love, trust, faith, and compassion—into art that resonates with others.
Statement
Creating art is a messy, weird process but it leads somewhere that isn’t. Through mixed media and a whole lot of layering I enjoy exploring with rich, bold palettes and textures to reveal the unseen. Subtleties with line and color can change an entire piece. I’d like to think when it works, it’s intentional. But so much of who I am and what I do with my work is just figuring it out as I go.
