MessageStatement
I was born in a little town called Louis Trichardt in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Our family of four emigrated to the United States in 2015, and we currently live in Omaha, Nebraska.
My medium of choice is pen and ink, and I choose to work only in black and white. Without the distraction and psychological interference of color, the viewer is free to focus on the content with clarity. My pen strokes are sensitive and delicate, drawing the viewer in and inviting them to experience it up close.
I have always had an insatiable curiosity about life and human experiences. I love using my subconscious as an endless pool of inspiration, combining unrelated elements. This playful juxtaposition of symbols often leads to mysterious and whimsical works of art. I like to withhold criticism and reason while I illustrate so that the art happens as a stream of consciousness - using symbols and shapes that come up in the moment. This approach to illustration is deeply rooted in my love of Surrealism. Breton wrote the following in his 1924 Manifesto of Surrealism: ”The more the relationship between the two juxtaposed realities is distant and true, the stronger the image will be - the greater its emotional power and poetic reality.”.
Art makes me feel alive. Without it, I feel lifeless and ungrounded. It is not just something I do…it is who I am.
