Originally from Canada, and now living in Madison, WI, I've studied and worked as a biologist in British Columbia and New Zealand before bringing my passion for the natural world into my artwork professionally.
Statement
Karen Faller is a mixed-media encaustic painter – primarily painting with beeswax, tree resin & pigments - who incorporates elements of original photography, collage, printmaking, and found objects in her encaustic work. A focus on nature and natural patterns are interwoven throughout her work, evoking a sense of place, and highlighting moments of change – big and small. Photographs, sewing patterns, repeating geometrical shapes, printed text, and rust prints are common elements embedded in the layers of wax in many of her pieces, exploring the ideas of the weathering of time, the idea of impermanence, and patterns found in nature.
