Collage/decollage of pieces from vintage craft magazine, embroidery thread, PVA glue and UV glaze on vintage postcard
4 x 5 3/4"
Created in my Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY studio.
Shown in Mining the Ruins: The Library, Northwestern Missouri State University, Maryville, MI, 2019.
On the piece:
The picturesque serenity of this landscape postcard from Ireland is disrupted with the jittery, dynamic energy of a hewn-together woven form tearing across.
Photographic collage elements from knitting and crochet magazines create an illusion of layered stitching. This is combined with physical embroidery, creating a surface duality that veers between image and object, illusionistic depth and tactile material. Mark making by tearing away creates shapes that could either be brushstrokes, or areas of destruction.
This piece is part of a series of works on vintage postcards that are essentially responses to the initial image. Often combining imagery from craft magazines and embroidery, as in this piece, they present a hand-crafted, imaginary alternative to the rational world of the past that the postcards allude to.
