Jutta Rika Bressem is a German abstract painter. Her work explores the fragility of natural, cultural, and technological systems within a painterly language.
MessageJutta Rika Bressem is a German abstract painter whose work explores moments where order becomes unstable, examining how natural, social, and political systems emerge, shift, and fracture.
Following an earlier focus on organic fragments and the deconstruction of botanical motifs, her practice has expanded toward socially and politically charged compositions. Today, she develops a consistent abstract visual language, utilizing layering, ruptures, and condensation to visualize the underlying tensions that define our time. While remaining non-representational, her paintings serve as a resonant space for the fragility of our contemporary world.
Her expressive style is deeply influenced by the works and theoretical concepts of Emil Schumacher and Joan Mitchell. Drawing from Schumacher’s unwavering dedication to Informel and Mitchell’s pioneering role as a woman in abstract art, Bressem develops her paintings within the tension between intuition and control. Working in her studio near the North Sea, the surrounding landscape, light, and atmosphere act as an additional resonance chamber, subtly shaping the color palettes, rhythms, and dynamics of her canvases.
Born in Frankfurt am Main, Bressem studied Painting and Communication Design at the University of Applied Sciences for Design in Wiesbaden, graduating with a master-level diploma. Her career includes a decade-long tenure (2004–2014) as a cultural project manager and department head for arts and culture for the city of Pasewalk, where she initiated the "KunstgARTen Pasewalk" project. An active figure in the arts community, she is a member of several regional chapters of the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Schleswig-Holstein) as well as the International Association of Visual Artists (IAVA).
Bressem’s work is collected internationally, with paintings held in private collections across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Greece, Portugal, Marbella, Turkey, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and numerous regions across the United States, including New York, California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, and Oregon.
The artist currently lives and works in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
Statement
The abstract use of layer, line, and form is my way of navigating the invisible currents of our world. I am fascinated by moments where order becomes unstable—where structures, whether natural or social, begin to shift, dissolve, and reform. My work is an open exploration of these delicate thresholds.
In the studio, my creative process is a constant dialogue between intuition and control. I work with ruptures, dense layering, and deliberate contrasts to bring the underlying tensions of our existence to the surface. Each canvas becomes a battlefield and a sanctuary at the same time, capturing the energy of movement and the beauty of change.
This painterly act does not intend to deliver a rigid message. It creates a sensory space beyond words—a resonant chamber for the fragility of our present.
