The Ashanti are renowned for their trade of precious metals with the Portuguese who were the first ones to build trading posts along the co-called coast of gold. Having become wealthy thanks to these trades, the Ashanti have created many figurines in bronze, which use could have consisted in weighting the gold they would provide to the Portuguese in exchange of objects from Europe. We can observe here a sculpture of a dignitary, very finely carved and presenting many details.
