Benin bronzes are probably the most famous bronzes of African art, in front of the Ifé and Owo craftsmanships. This is due to the proximity with the Atlantic coast, which enabled trades with the Portuguese since the 15th century. For the Benin people, the leopard is a mighty and powerful royal animal, which rules the savanna as the king rules over his people. It also serves as a symbol of justice.
Aquamanile in the shape of a leopard was the sole property of the Oba - the leopard was the royal animal. Pectorals, hip and waist ornaments in the shape of human or animal heads were worn either by the Oba or by major dignitaries.
