Intervals of Place

The collection within Intervals of Place functions as a visual score, mapping the resonance between the physical world and our internal emotional landscapes. Through the tactile medium of mosaic, Julie Mazzoni explores the rhythmic pauses and shifting intensities of human experience. These pieces function as visual movements – intervals where the vibrant energy of nature meets the quiet, contemplative strength of spirit.

Mazzoni works in a varied material palette to conduct these emotional shifts. Her smalti compositions, featuring bold textures and innovative smalti dots, act as the fortissimo of the collection. Saturated with color and sculptural depth, these pieces radiate a vitality that captures the raw power and resilience found in nature. Conversely, her stained glass works operate in the minor key. Utilizing a more muted palette, these pieces articulate the delicate counterpoint between serenity and loneliness, using light and stillness to evoke a sense of atmospheric solitude.

From the intricate micro mosaics to the expansive abstract and realistic vistas, the exhibit is unified by its lyrical sensibility. Each title serves as a thematic signpost, inviting the viewer to look beyond the surface and feel the underlying cadence of the work. Intervals of Place encourages an immersive engagement with the medium, challenging the viewer to find their own harmony within the glass – a place where the spirit of the land and the echoes of the heart converge.
