As a biracial person who is usually assumed to be white, I'm acutely aware of the dissonance between external appearance and internal realities. Motherhood has been that kind of an experience for me – the clash of perception and reality on so many levels. “It’s Not the Same” is one of a series of works that explore that confrontation and asks questions of the viewer: What do you see in this artwork at first glance versus after some time with it? Do you see connections made or missed connections? Can many things be true at the same time?
