MessageAs an artist, playing with color, texture and form surprises and delights me. I’m constantly innovating with new materials. I began exploring the form with clay in the late 1990’s at Maude Kerns’ Club Mud in Eugene, and moved onto printmaking at the A6 Studio in Bend, Oregon with Master Printmaker, Patricia Clark, a dear friend and mentor who encouraged me to dive deep into mixed media and works on paper.
I discovered gel pads in 2020 while stuck at home during the pandemic, and started making monotypes on tissue paper with them. I incorporate these papers into my paintings, collages, assemblages and installations made of paper wire and wax, and am now exploring printing on fabric, plexiglass, and etching the images of my original prints. I’m also collaborating with technologists to create immersive and tactile art experiences for public art installations.
In my new body of work, I’m exploring the vestiges of nature and mark-making with paper and fiber sculptures to illustrate humanity’s fragility and interdependence on each other, and the natural world. We are balancing hope and heartbreak as we adapt in this time of global pandemic and climate change. These disruptions to our daily life force us to learn new ways to co-exist in community.
