Julia Santos Solomon is one of the most successful contemporary Dominican artists on the landscape today. Julia is a multi-faceted artist creating paintings, sculpture, drawings and mixed media. The bright colors of the Caribbean landscape are an important vehicle for her expression. She portrays the mystery and beauty of the vegetation. Julia’s work has been exhibited nationally and abroad. Currently, her work is represented in many public collections, including several museums. Her work was featured in the art publications New Art International 2004 and Acrylic Revolution 2007.
Julia was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in the United States. At age 14, she knew she wanted to become an artist, and pursued her goal. A!er a"ending the High School of Art and Design in New York, she received a full scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design. She a"ended Brown University while still at RISD. She went to Rome, Italy with RISD's European Honor's Program. Over the course of three years, she discovered her kinship with the Italian Renaissance masters. The Italian light awakened her pale"e and inspired a series of Caribbean landscapes. She became a founding member of The Altos de Chavon School of Design, a Parsons School affiliate, in the Dominican Republic. She moved back to the United States and taught at Parsons School of Design in Manha"an for 18 years. In 1996, she moved to Woodstock, NY where she currently resides.
