Julia Chandler Lawing
Concord, NC
contemporary oil painter • believer • beauty chaser • visual psalmist • Georgia native • longtime North Carolinian
MessageJulia's artistic journey began early, deeply influenced by her childhood on St. Simons Island, Georgia, where she moved at age 12. Daily interactions with the Golden Isles' serene wetlands and ever-changing light profoundly shaped her aesthetic sensibility. Her creative path is a testament to her lifelong love affair with nature and the expressive power of visual storytelling. This innate connection to the natural world is a recurring theme in Julia's work, where she seeks to capture the elusive essence of beautiful moments and evoke emotion through her vibrant palette and dynamic compositions.
Julia’s art is featured in private collections across the US and Canada, corporate collections including Towne Bank and Georgia State University College of Law, and public installations. When not traveling or painting on location, Julia creates in her studio at ClearWater Arts Center in downtown Concord where visitors are always welcome.
Julia thrives on sensory experiences like sunbathing, barefoot walks, and ocean swims. She collects natural treasures such as feathers, seashells, abandoned nests, and is thrilled to catch glimpses of butterflies, hummingbirds, dolphins and sea turtles. She listens to a wide range of music, lately Irish bands like Van Morrison, Amble and Kingfisher. Julia falls in love with nearly every place she has ever visited but is rather fiercely devoted to her native country, family (husband Bruce, four adult daughters and one son-in-law, and Westie, Georgia), and her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ.
Statement
My subjects come from memories of rest and play in both new and familiar places. Intimate, happy occasions—beach campfires, lighthouse hikes, lobster boils and sunset sails—are making appearances in my sketchbook and on my easel. Vibrant color is applied via impasto brushstrokes.
“These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but…they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.” —C.S. Lewis, The Weight Of Glory
