At a clearing among the reeds of the Lowcountry marshes, one might find a quiet moment to lie on the beach and muse about days gone by. What tales were told? What tales would you create? Some of the folklore of the low country follows a mysterious thread such as this:
Growing up in South Carolina's low country, Noah always heard local legends about the Marsh Whisperer, some spirit that talked through the breeze and birdcalls.
One overcast morning, curiosity got the better of him. He hopped into his old boat, pushing further into the marsh, away from the familiar hum of town life. As he rowed, the sounds of the city dimmed, replaced by the soft chirps and rustles of the wetlands.
Out of nowhere, a gentle humming reached his ears. Drawn to it, he rowed toward an isolated pocket where the grasses seemed to move in sync. He just sat there for a while, taking in the sounds.
By the time he headed back, Noah wasn't sure if he'd really heard the Marsh Whisperer or if it was just nature's magic. Either way, he knew he'd experienced something special.
When pondering this painting maybe this tale will come to mind and bring a smile to your face. Or maybe you'll come up with a tale of your own. :)
