Imperial China (2017) examines bone china as a European commodity imported from Asia and later exported to the Americas at a higher market value. The typological grid compares the objects’ identifying marks and details of logos, company trademarks, numbers, and collectors’ marks to represent the political forces manipulating their market value. The photographs recontextualize the objects within the entangled histories of colonial trade, the exotic tourism industry, and the transoceanic Afro-Cuban American diaspora. Moreover, the work considers how the colonial markets of exploitation, extraction, and appropriation carries over into our existing global markets.
