A question mark hovers over a church cathedral, and this, itself, is intriguing and subject to many kinds of interpretations. Is the artist an atheist? Does he question church doctrine? “Joseph wasn’t religious, but he was surrounded in Mexico by local peoples who were. There are churches everywhere in Mexico. I guess he found it contradicting. Cathedral is a study in symmetry, which in the hand of an amateur would be tediously boring. In the hands a master of color, drawing and design it becomes a masterpiece of subtleties. Lofton strong sense of design and drawing create strong visual interests. Using the blue color sparingly, with thin layers of canvas, he highlights the angel who seems to be modeled on Rodin’s The Thinker. Perhaps, Lofton believes that even angels contemplate the vast ideological musing of religious orthodoxy and thought.
